This original stone lithograph by Jacques Lagrange is a vibrant example of post-war French abstraction at its most energetic and refined. Executed in 1959, this work belongs to a pivotal period in the artist’s career, where color, rhythm, and composition fully converge.
Lagrange (1917–1995), a key figure within the École de Paris, developed a unique visual language influenced by Cubism, Fauvism, and modernist abstraction. His work is celebrated for its dynamic interplay of form and color, often balancing geometry with a lyrical, almost musical flow.
Art critic Waldemar George famously compared Lagrange only to Henri Matisse in his magical use of colour. After establishing a studio near the botanical gardens in Antibes in 1954, Lagrange’s palette intensified dramatically, earning him the title “architect of light” and international recognition. His works entered major modern art museum collections during this time.
This piece, created through the traditional stone lithography process, is not a reproduction but an original print made by the artist himself. Each color is layered with precision, resulting in the rich saturation and painterly quality that defines Lagrange’s work.
