This vibrant 1980 poster promotes the Musiche e Cerimonie dell’Islam event, held at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan. The poster visually captures the energy and spirituality of the Whirling Dervishes, who are depicted in their ritualistic dance as part of a long-standing Sufi tradition. Their dynamic movements, executed in flowing white garments and red hats, symbolize the active form of meditation practiced by the dervishes.
Artist Francesco Messina created the striking artwork, complemented by the photograph of Ira Friedlander, while the poster was printed by Tipografia Commerciale Venezia.
The performance, featuring Fratelli Sabri, was held on July 1st and showcased Canti dell’Estasi, referring to the ecstatic music of the Sabri Brothers, famed Pakistani Qawwali musicians. The event also included exhibitions dedicated to Islamic art, showcasing a variety of elements such as calligraphy, miniatures, and architecture, further enriching Milan’s cultural scene.
