This original vintage French exhibition poster was created in 1976 for the major John Constable exhibition at the Musée du Louvre, Pavillon de Flore. Titled “Esquisses et dessins du Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres,” the show marked an important collaboration between the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux (RMN) in Paris, the French institution responsible for publishing official museum posters.
The artwork depicted on this poster likely features Salisbury Cathedral, one of Constable’s most iconic subjects, rendered with his trademark skies and atmospheric light. Printed on sturdy matte paper by RMN, this piece perfectly captures the elegance of 1970s French museum design.
John Constable, one of Britain’s greatest Romantic painters, was celebrated for his naturalistic depictions of the English countryside, particularly Suffolk and Salisbury. His luminous treatment of sky and light profoundly influenced later artists, including the French Impressionists such as Monet and Pissarro.
This poster is both a beautifully designed artifact of art history and a true collectible for lovers of vintage French museum posters, Romantic art, and 19th-century landscape painting. Its remarkable condition and cultural significance make it an ideal piece for framing and display.
